Speech Day at Harrow Hengqin was celebrated on the last day of the academic year. Each student formally processed past the Head Master in Bill, a Harrow tradition, and in separate Lower School and Upper School Prizegiving ceremonies we marked the outstanding achievements of students in academic fields, sports, arts and leadership. There were speeches – of course – by the school leaders and students, and the much anticipated result of the House Cup was that Bing Xin won. Cue much cheering and yellow confetti.

In his speech about success and failure, on this day of celebrating achievement, the Head Master referenced Tuesday’s Masterclass talk from Dr Tal Ben-Shahar in which he shared research that showed ‘Success does not lead to Happiness but Happiness leads to Success’. He thanked the school for their welcome this year, their kindness, ambition, spirit and energetic singing of Harrow Songs!

Last year, I remembered coming to an Open Day and was amazed by the big swimming pool and the giant football field. But what really made me curious was watching the older students talking and debating. They switched languages so easily! I realized that although fancy buildings may be nice, free thinking is what helps us as students grow.
This has been my first year at Harrow Hengqin. When my mom talked about the 450-year history of Harrow School, I thought she was speaking of a cold old castle. It couldn’t have been further from the truth as I found out, Harrow Hengqin is actually a warm place that mixes new modern ideas with old traditions.
Every day, I walk by a picture of Winston Churchill, and it feels like he’s smiling at me. I now know that true tradition isn’t just old sayings on the wall; it’s the new stories we create—like using new technology to build homes for bugs, winning races with smart strategies, and blending our school song with English and Chinese.
I’m thankful to Harrow for teaching me that tradition is never-ending and school can be a place full of energy and ideas. As my mother likes to say, “千里之行,始于足下.” I want to add, “Each step makes new history.”

I’m honored to share what this year has taught me about growth—not through trophies or medals, but through the courage to try, stumble, and try again.
As a founding student since Grade 4, I’ve learned that opportunities are gifts. But here’s the secret: they rarely feel comfortable at first. When I ran for House Captain in Grade 5 and didn’t succeed, disappointment could have stopped me. This year, I tried again—not because winning was guaranteed, but because Lyon House deserved my full effort. As Captain, I faced my biggest challenge during House movie, which was balancing everyone’s voices while leading forward. It wasn’t about perfection; it was about listening, learning, and growing into the leader my team needed.
Stepping beyond my comfort zone became my theme this year. I joined competitions—from English Hippo to Science Bee—not just for awards, but to test my limits.
Beyond academics, I continue my passion, and I went with a group of talented students to perform at the Shanghai Harrow Music Festival. Onstage, I wasn’t just a student; I was part of something bigger. These moments reminded me that growth happens when we dare to explore—whether we succeed or stumble.
So today, my proudest rewards aren’t prizes. They’re the nerves before trying something new, the teamwork that turns setbacks into comebacks, and the belief that every “first attempt” plants a seed for future success. To my fellow students: Harrow isn’t just a school—it’s a launchpad. Let’s keep stepping forward, even when it feels uncertain, because the lessons we gain will far outlast any result.
Choral and Band Performances
Harrow Students’ Talent Showcase
Speech Day is not only a moment to honour outstanding pupils, but also a stage for Harrovians to showcase their talents. The Lower School Choir gave a moving performance of “Snowflakes” and “Farewell”, their harmonious voices touching the hearts of all present. This was followed by a rousing full-choir rendition of “We’re All in This Together” by the entire Lower School.

The Upper School Orchestra performed “SUMMER SONG”, an original piece co-written by our Mr Bulla and the students — a lively melody full of energy. In addition, Upper School students delivered a heartfelt drama performance mixing Shakespeare and intense drama.

Congratulations to this year’s House Cup champions —Bing Xin House, whose house colour is yellow.

The academic year 2024-25 has come to a successful conclusion. We wished the students and staff a well-earned summer break before the new academic year begins on 1 September, as they prepare to achieve new milestones and continue their journey of excellence.
