Harrow Hengqin Becomes a Member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS)

Recently, Harrow Hengqin officially became a member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS). In the presence of the school’s Sustainable Ambassadors, Head Master signed The Sustainable Schools Charter.

TASS is an international non-profit educational network that brings together like-minded schools from around the world, all committed to driving sustainable development and systemic change in education. The alliance focuses on five key areas: school buildings, school buses, school food, school uniforms, and education for sustainability. Through collaboration and practical initiatives, it aims to guide the education sector towards a greener and more responsible future.

Joining TASS marks a significant step forward for Harrow Hengqin on its journey towards sustainable development and further reflects the school’s educational mission of nurturing responsible global citizens.

At Harrow Hengqin, sustainability is deeply embedded in both teaching and campus culture, in line with the school’s core values of Courage, Honour, Humility, and Fellowship. By combining action with education, the school continues to inspire all members of its community to understand and embrace environmental responsibility.

To raise environmental awareness across the campus, the Sustainable Ambassadors have established a weekly information board displaying real-time data on the school’s electricity usage and food waste. This encourages pupils and staff alike to adopt mindful consumption habits and to make conscious efforts to conserve resources in their everyday lives.

In practical terms, the school has launched an eco-garden project led by the Sustainable Ambassadors. Pupils raised funds to install solar panels and actively participate in sustainable gardening practices. The eco-garden also supports the school’s food waste composting scheme, transforming organic waste from the canteen into fertiliser for the plants.

To reduce resource waste and lower the school’s carbon footprint, a school uniform exchange initiative has also been introduced, encouraging the reuse of pre-loved items and fostering a culture of appreciation and value preservation. In addition, pupils regularly take part in coastal clean-up activities on Qi’ao Island, helping to protect the local marine ecosystem and the habitats of endangered species such as the Chinese White Dolphin.

Through these meaningful actions, the school not only cultivates a culture of sustainability within its campus but also extends its positive influence to the wider community and natural environment. Following its membership in TASS, Harrow Hengqin will collaborate with member schools worldwide to share experiences, participate in joint projects, and explore new approaches to addressing global sustainability challenges through education.
